ILO Global Business and Disability Network 11th Global Annual Conference 27-28 November
 
The ILO Global Business and Disability Network (GBDN) will host its 11th global annual conference “From Margin to Mainstream: Disability in Business” on 27th and 28th November 2024 at the ILO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland – using a hybrid modality. The free-of-charge ILO GBDN conference will allow for the welcoming of new ILO GBDN members, the exchange on good corporate practices on disability inclusion, the presentation of latest business initiatives on disability at global and local level as well as the informal networking of conference participations. You will be able to follow the conference online on ILO Live - the ILO's livestreaming platform.

In an October 2024 B2B roundtable by the ILO Global Business and Disability Network for the Network’s 40 multinational enterprise members, Dr Florian Koemm, Vice President and General Counsel Middle East, Siemens Energy shared how his company is leveraging the Tool to drive their disability inclusion work.
 
Business Disability Forum Global Conference: Disability inclusion in a changing world
 
Business Disability Forum will hold their Global Conference online on 21 November between 10:00-16:00 GMT. Topics such as the European Accessibility Act and the increasing Environment, Governance and Social (ESG) reporting will be discussed. Live captions and British Sign Language interpretation will be provided.
 
Exploring Reasonable Accommodations for Persons with Disabilities session at the 13th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights
 
Building on last year’s session on Disability Rights as part of Business and Human Rights, this year’s session focuses on reasonable accommodation, sometimes referred to as “reasonable adjustments”, as a crucial element for upholding the rights of persons with disabilities in the context of business activities, and for strengthening their inclusion in all aspects of society. Reasonable accommodation aims to provide equal opportunities for employees at the workplace, so their skills and talents can be used to full capacity, ultimately enabling businesses to create work environments that truly welcome the diversity of their staff and contribute to business activities.

Webinar on Apprenticeships and Work-Based Learning for People with Disabilities 20 November 14:00-15:00 CET
 
Organised by the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) together with the Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN), and the ILO Global Business Disability Network (GBDN), this online event on “Tapping into Talent: Inclusive Apprenticeships and Work-Based Learning (WBL) for People with Disabilities” aims to position apprenticeship and WBL programs as a means to bridge the skills gap and equip employers with practical knowledge to foster inclusive workplaces. The discussions will explore the vital role of inclusive apprenticeships and work-based learning in addressing the global skills gap and fostering inclusive workplaces for people with disabilities.
 
Empowerment Through A Click: Zain and Be My Eyes Partnership
 
Zain has formed a regional-first strategic partnership with Be My Eyes, enhancing its commitment to inclusion. This collaboration aims to offer real-time visual assistance to people who are blind or have low vision. Following successful pilot projects, Zain employees will now serve as sighted volunteers on the Be My Eyes platform, participating in 16 volunteer events over the course of a year. The initiative is set to support 700,000 blind users worldwide, including 100,000 Arabic speakers who benefit from the app.

The session "Business leadership on disability rights as human rights", at the 3rd African Business and Human Rights Forum highlighted the human rights generally, and the labour rights specifically, of persons with disabilities as a marginalised group, which can be and are already protected and promoted by leading companies in the African business community. Multinational enterprises (MNEs), regionally and nationally operating companies as well as Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa show a growing commitment to the inclusion of people with disabilities in their policies, programmes and workforces.

Zimbabwe launches National Business and Disability Network
 
The Employer's Confederation of Zimbabwe (EMCOZ) in collaboration with the international non-governmental organisation Sightsavers and the International Labour Organization (ILO) officially launched the National Business and Disability Network. The network aims to push for inclusive employment practices in Zimbabwe and seeks to create more job opportunities for persons with disabilities.

PurpleSpace Global Disability ERG Summit
 
On 15 October, PurpleSpace hosted their first ever Global Disability ERG Summit, sponsored by Financial Times, Motability Operations and MSD. The global community of people with disabilities expressed (via ERGs) their collective view of the drivers of workplace equity that, if tackled, would result in lasting change in the employment prospects of employees with disabilities. PurpleSpace have confirmed the date of the next Global Disability ERG Summit as 15 October 2026 and you can register interest to host, sponsor or attend on their website.
